PJ's Bar & Grill, New World Petaling Jaya Hotel

For good food, delicious cocktails as well as the finest views of Petaling Jaya and the surrounding cityscape, head up to PJ's Bar & Grill, in the recently opened, swanky New World Petaling Jaya Hotel.

Located on the 30th floor of the hotel, guests can opt to dine in the comfort of the air-conditioned, stylish restaurant during the day. Come night, the al fresco dining area by the rooftop pool is the place to be to enjoy a romantic dinner with a 360-degree view of the city (and perhaps a spot of star gazing).

The menu is a mix of Western and Asian grilled items, as well as tapas-style small plates, specially crafted by Executive Chef Alexander Chong and his kitchen team. We had the pleasure of tasting some of the creations which will be making their way into the new menu soon, as well as some of the existing menu items.

Beautifully vibrant, the Seared tuna with avocado and wasabi dressing appetizer ticked all the right boxes. The tuna, lightly seared so it's still rare in the centre, was paired with arugula, edible flowers and creamy avocado. Light and delicious!

For something a little richer, go for the Seafood Chowder, served in a mini cast iron pot. Creamy and laden with treasures of the sea such as tiger prawns, snapper and clams, this would be a lovely, warming soup for a cold rainy evening.

PJ's Bar & Grill embraces local Malaysian cuisine with its rendition of Malaysian Chicken Satay pizza. The pizza contains all the elements of chicken satay, including chunks of marinated chicken, raw onions, cucumber and chilli on a deliciously cheesy pizza base.

For those who prefer the real deal, there is also Beef and Chicken Satay on the menu. We especially loved the beef satay, which features chunky, tender pieces of well-marinated beef, skewered and then grilled for that lovely char. Served with a spicy, peanut sauce.

You can't go wrong with the Beef Burger.. juicy beef patty, layered with tomatoes, lettuce, Cheddar cheese, gherkins, grain mustard, a fried egg - all between two charcoal buns. Comes with crisp steak fries and mayo.

There will also be daily specials, ask one of the staff or check out the daily boards. Loved the piquant tomato sambal which went extremely well with the seared barramundi. This dish reminded me of the Malaysian ikan bakar (grilled fish) dish.

For dessert, we recommend the Cameron Highland strawberries which comes with two unique ice cream flavours - aged balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The strawberries, balsamic and olive oil combination is a classic and works brilliantly together. We especially enjoyed the smooth, creamy olive oil ice cream.

The Pineapple dessert was also pretty good, featuring grilled, caramelised pineapple with a hint of spiciness from the chilli, complemented with coconut ice cream which helps mellow out the heat.

While you're here, try one of their signature cocktails - we loved the Pineapple Ginger Margarita and Passionfruit Martini. If you prefer something non-alcoholic, order the refreshing Homemade lemonade or Iced hibiscus tea.
