Ramadan Buffet 2017 @ Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa

This Ramadan, The Resort Cafe at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa will be featuring a collection of timeless Malaysian recipes, with over 400 authentic dishes for breaking fast. Inspired by the proverbial expression "Jemput Makan", diners are invited to immerse themselves into the bustling energy of The Resort Cafe, and be enticed by the interactivity, aromas and flavours of the nostalgic and traditional dishes from different regions in Malaysia specially put together by Chef de Cuisine Parthiban Nalliah and his kitchen team.

Taking centrestage this year are 16 varieties of Rendang, Steamboat with 5 signature broths and 70 ingredients to choose from, Live action stations with fresh and grilled seafood, Kambing golek, Bubur lambuk, Seafood on ice, Sup Gearbox Turbo, and 18 varieties of specialty rice dishes.

During the media preview, we were served a Warisan Ramadan Platter, which consisted of three types of Nasi (Nasi pandan, nasi hujan panas and nasi kerabu) along with three types of rendang (chicken, duck and beef) as well as lemang and serunding on the side. Such a pretty platter and it was utterly delicious too.

Our favorite was the Rendang Daging Tok, a dry beef rendang originating from Perak - the beef chunks were gloriously tender. The other two rendangs that we had was the Rendang Ayam Minangkabau from Negeri Sembilan, as well as the less common Rendang Utara Itik from Kedah. Diners can also expect other rendang during the Ramadan buffet such as Rendang daging Rembau, Rendang Daging Mamu, Rndang Daging Nyonya, Rendang Ayam Serai, Rendang Hati, Rendang Berempah Hitam - Pasir Mas and more.

There will also be 18 varieties of nasi served on a daily rotation, other than the three that we tried, there will also be Nasi tomato, Nasi kunyit ayam, various types of Nasi biryani (ayam, telur, gam, udang, kambing),  Nasi pelangi, Nasi kerabu, Nasi bukhara buah gajus and more.

For the steamboat, the chefs will help you cook your chosen ingredients in the chosen broth. The seafood selection is fantastic, you can choose from red grouper fish fillets, bamboo clams, green and black mussels, flower crabs, and prawns as well as premium meats such as beef, chicken and lamb. Other than that, diners can also choose vegetables, mushrooms, and noodles to complement the meal. Next, diners can select one of the signature broths for their ingredients to be cooked in - assam laksa, tom yum, assam pedas, sichuan and clear broth. Finally, diners can choose from 16 different sauces to go with their steamboat.

The carving station will feature Kambing Golek- the whole leg of lamb is boiled for two hours and then marinated with local spices and mixed herbs such as ginger, garlic, salt, masala, coriander, yoghurt, mint leaves and cumin powder, and then slow-roasted for four hours. The meat was tender and juicy, served with a percik sauce.

For seafood enthusiasts, a variety of fresh seafood on ice will be on offer such as clams, prawns, half shell mussels, slipper lobsters, flower crabs, salmon sashimi and tuna sashimi.

One of the most sought after dish at The Resort Cafe's Ramadan buffet is the aromatic Sup Gearbox Turbo. This crowd-favorite is cooked over a slow fire for eight hours, and individual bone marrow is served to diners from a large cauldron.

The Bubur Lambuk Parit Buntar is inspired by Chef Norza's grandmother's recipe - it is a confluence of recipes and cooking methods from Kedah, Perak and Penang.

Noodle lovers are in for a treat - we sampled the Selera Assam Pedas, whereby egg noodles are served with a huge and fresh king river prawn in Chef's special assam pedas broth. Wonderfully appetizing.  There will also be mee rojak, mee bandung Sumatra, laksa lemak, laksa Johor, prawn mee and pan mee.

There will also be a Warung Bakar-Bakar, where you will find grilled fish, squid and other seafood. Don't forget to check out the Gulai Kawah that will be served outdoors in super large cauldrons.

You will also find mains such as sambal petai prawn

There will be traditional ulam-ulaman, kerabu, pasembur, gado-gado, mieng kham, som tam, pecal jawa, and rojak buah. We tried the Pecal Jawa, a traditional Javanese influenced Malay salad, consisting of mixed vegetables, meehoon and peanut sauce dressing.

For dessert, check out the vast selection of Malay and Nyonya desserts as well as goreng-goreng items such as goreng pisang and keledek, penget durian, apam balik and fresh tropical fruits. There will also be a chocolate fountain, bread and butter pudding and much more.
